The secret meat inspection board investigates the death of Igor Kurzweiler (Marien Jongewaard), the director of the Diepvlees firm; he was found dead in his office with a piece of flesh torn from his thigh. The reconstruction of the bizarre death of a paranoid man slowly unfolds and leads to a hilarious apotheosis of dancing pigs and a singing piece of human flesh. The reconstruction presents us with a wonderful image of human cowardice and social division. How far can we probe into someone else's secrets? And if we do so, do we not also cut into our own flesh? Diepvlees is an eavesdropper's opera for four men who sing softly and sweetly, two harpists and several kilometres of magnetic tape. Wilco once more presents innovative and surprising music theatre in collaboration with Nieuw West and Productiehuis Rotterdam. Following on from their Lautsprecher Arnolt (2004) and De dood van Poppea (2006), Huba de Graaf (composer), Erik-Ward Geerlings (text) and Bart Visser (design) now continue their collaboration under the collective name of Wilco.
behind the scenes:
The disconnection of source and product
This piece is not a complaint against the bio-industry, although we use the setting of a ‘secret meat inspection board' as a means of showing this disconnection.
