Although we now read these texts simply as plays, the Dutch 17th century tragedies were actually intended as libretti for music theatre pieces or musicals as they would be termed today. This is especially true of P.C. Hooft's Granida. After travelling through France and Italy for three years, the 17-year old P.C. Hooft returned to Amsterdam filled with new ideas in 1601. What he had seen in Italy, he now wanted in Amsterdam: opera, a play set to music. The result of this was Granida. Princess Granida meets the shepherd Daifilo and it is love at first sight. Despite their differences in origin and character, they bring out the best in each other and become not only inseparable but also an ideal royal couple. Granida enjoyed an enormous success in Amsterdam; countless paintings of the period depict the happy couple. For music, Hooft made use of the popular tunes of his time. Stichting Ipermestra now gives this lyrical work full of compelling music the chance to sparkle and shine as it was originally intended. With Tania Kross as Granida and Jeroen de Vaal as Daifilo.
