Hitler is dead. His principal seconds-in-command Goebbels and Himmler had committed suicide. Goering and Speer quickly fell into the hands of the West. The Axis of Evil had been conquered, the world lay in ruins. Where to go from here? This was the question before the Allies in Nuremberg during the summer months of the Liberation in 1945. Writer and director Stijn Devillé sets four young prosecutors, the ‘good guys', against four old hands from the Nazi period. The first group wants only to think of the future and wants to see the Holocaust relegated to history; the other group sees only death before them. Devillé has taken historical accounts, cross-examinations and confessions as his basis and discovers that you can sometimes sing about matters that you cannot speak about. How can we understand what happened? How do you punish genocide? And how can you create democracy in a country where a large part of the population was accessories to the fact? Against the background of a city in ruins, where people live in holes and collapsed bomb shelters, where drinking water has to be trapped in canvas sacks, the young Allied colleagues attempt to develop a morality for the future. Tensions and differences of opinion arise between the accused themselves, for what is a survival strategy for one can sign the death warrant of another. Hitler is dead, but the bitter inheritance that he left behind is enormous. Rudy Trouvé, Geert Waegeman and Gerrit Valckenaers have written music that that makes these tensions tangible in a way that gets under the skin, creating a balance between acoustic and electronic instruments, between historical samples and experimental German Krautrock.
