China is a proud land with a culture that is thousands of years old. Chinese culture is everywhere, and especially in Rotterdam. There has been a Chinese Cultural Centre here for years already, called Wah Fook Wui. It is with great pleasure that this organisation now displays its surprises to the general public - just to give one example, you probably did not know that Rotterdam has three Cantonese Opera companies. These companies will introduce themselves over four days; each day between 4 and 5 pm you will also have a unique opportunity to see a short Cantonese Opera.

Wah Fook Wui will also be the performing space for musicians Peter Jacquemyn and Eric Thielemans with their project Chinamen Plan #1, an improvised opera. Operadagen Rotterdam is proud to present this preview of the piece. With their preference for improvisation, jazz, contemporary music and multidisciplinary projects, Jacquemyn and Thielemans take Chinese and Western musicians as well as visual artists and performers along on their adventure.

The centre will be open on Saturday 30 May between noon and 5pm for concerts, lectures and other events in various spaces of the centre. You can also listen to Chinese singers who are studying voice at the Conservatory of Arnhem as well as lectures about Chinese music theatre by experts from the Erasmus University. In brief: ni hao to Wah Fook Wui!

Interview with Anthony Heidweiller, theatrical creator, and Yiu Cheung, director of Wah Fook Wui

The best-kept Chinese secret in Rotterdam

Enthusiasm, passion, consolation - these are the key works of Anthony Heidweiller's work as singer, director, initiator and director of the YO! Youth Opera Festival. He is a man with a mission: to make all men realise that they are brothers through opera. It is for this reason that Operadagen Rotterdam has engaged him to get to work with the theme of this year's festival: China, East meets West.
