Acclaimed director Christoph Marthaler, who has long been at the forefront of European music theatre, opens the anniversary edition of Operadagen Rotterdam with King Size. This time, Marthaler reimagines the Liederabend.

First Night at the Opera - Various artists from various countries

After King Size, the festival's opening night continues in the Rotterdamse Schouwburg. Experience various concerts and small music theatre performances throughout the building.

Grace and Glory - Anonymous4 (US)

Anonymous4, the renowned American female a cappella quartet, will perform Grace and Glory: Songs from Medieval France and Early America, which features French motets as well as American shape-note tunes, gospel songs, and folk hymns.

Tenor Battle - Bram Stadhouders' Cantata (NL), Håkon Kornstad (NO)

The Dutch jazz musician Bram Stadhouders kicks off the evening with a mystic musical story, inspired by modern opera. Subsequently, the Norwegian saxofonist and opera tenor Håkon Kornstad will surprise us with a unique combination of opera and jazz.

Daral Shaga - Kris Defoort (BE), Feria Musica (FR)

Daral Shaga is collaboration between director Fabrice Murgia, composer Kris Defoort, and Feria Musica about the inhuman fate of (many) refugees. Acrobats, musicians and singers put the audience in touch with a modern tale about migration.Beautiful images, French spoken with Dutch surtitles.

love fail - David Lang (US), Anonymous4 (US)

love fail is a piece by 'composer of the year 2013' David Lang especially for the renowned Anonymous4 women's quartet. It is based on the medieval story of Tristan and Isolde: a story about a pure but impossible love.

Liebeskrank - Mechanical Duck (NL)

Mechanical Duck is a collaboration of four openminded and adventurous musicians. Blom (Sax), Oosterbeek (Hammond organ) and Schlarmann (drums) have joined forces with operasinger Charles Hens as they reinterpret all songs of Schubert's Die Schöne Müllerin.

Private View - 33⅓ Collective (NL), Asko|Schönberg (NL), Neue Vocalsolisten (DE)

The opera Private View by composer Annelies van Parys and the video makers of 331⁄3 collective, has the suspense of a true thriller and is inspired by Hitchcock. The opera confronts us with the inherent ambiguity of watching and being watched.

Starring American sopranos Claron McFadden as Semele and Roberta Alexander as Juno, Handel's tragic love story has been specially adapted by director Sjaron Minailo for Operadagen.
Sung in German with Dutch surtitles.

Kaleidoskopville - Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop (DE)

Kaleidoskopville is a piece about a village and its rituals by the Kaleidoskop-ensemble from Berlin. It is inspired by Richard Brautigan's novel In Watermelon Sugar about a commune.

Artist in residence David Lang studied the 600 songs from Schubert and discovered an unsettling and recurring theme: death. death speaks is an intense tribute to Schubert's music, in which Death speaks for himself.

HEX - Dyane Donck (NL), Els Mondelaers (BE)

HEX is a hypnotizing performance about the three archetypical appearances of the woman: virgin, mother and witch. The public will be seated inside a circle, surrounded by instruments, projections and the Belgian mezzo-soprano Els Mondelaers.
