The annual young artist programme 'Nieuwe Stemmen' of Operadagen Rotterdam is set to present a number of performances as part of the 2016 festival, May 20-29, and centering around a new fully staged production of Monteverdi's L'ORFEO. Participants in Nieuwe Stemmen spend 8 months creating their own individual solo programme, receiving regular private musical and dramatic coaching, as well as being led in the dramaturgy of creating a full-length and fully integrated work to be presented several times in the week leading up to the festival in the form of House Concerts. In addition, they participate in a number of intensive rehearsal weekends to create a new production of Monteverdi's undisputed masterpiece, the L'ORFEO of 1607, performed two times as part of the festival. Additional performances in the festival are also possible. Selected participants receive both training and honorarium.

Nieuwe Stemmen is the young artist wing of Operadagen Rotterdam, seeking to provide training and performance opportunities to extremely talented young vocalists – guiding them in the creation of their own solo music-theater piece, as well as a group project each year. The program is coordinated by Monique van Gool, and is directed artistically by Timothy Nelson.
Nieuwe Stemmen seeks highly talented and trained young singers (no age limit), who are also interested in exploring new ways to reach audiences through experimental theater techniques, physical theater, and adventuresome programming. The program looks for intelligent and creative performers, open to experiencing and creating new ideas as an ensemble.
Considered the first great opera, L'ORFEO of Monteverdi is a work of profound beauty and emotional depth. It is a true ensemble piece, and this new version will present the work in its most direct and raw dramatic form. Participants will first work in depth on the musical style of the early 17th century, and then participate in an exciting process of experimentation and creation to form a physical language to relate this epic work to a contemporary audience.
Individual coachings for House Concerts are scheduled at the participant and coach's availability, however the following rehearsal periods for L'ORFEO must be kept free:
December 4 - 6, 2015
January 15 - 17, 2016
