Fortress Europe is a brand-new opera about one of the most important issues of our time, the refugee crisis. It is the first instalment of Sign of the Times, a series of operas yet to be written that zero in on current events. The opera tells the story of Lady Europe and her son who is a politician. Europe faced up to the world with courage and full of ideals when she was a young woman but she now leads an isolated existence in her Brussels apartment as her son guards the gateway into Europe. The drama that ensues is brimming with political interests, personal cravings, and rumours of populist fears and hate.
